MannaFork is a mobile app that scans product barcodes and labels and gives each product a score out of 100. It is made by Andrea Davide Zavattini, trading as Manna Fork (a registered business name; sole trader, Australia). In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Manna Fork.
We wrote MannaFork to work without accounts. You do not sign up, log in, or give us your name, email or phone number to use it.
1. The short version
- No account, no name, no email. We don’t ask who you are.
- Your scan history stays on your phone. We don’t upload it.
- Label photos are read on your phone. The photo itself is never sent to us.
- Product information is shared. When you look up a barcode, the barcode number is sent to free public product databases and to our server. When you save a label for a product nobody else has, the product details (not your photo, not anything about you) are shared with other MannaFork users.
- We don’t sell data, show ads, or track you across other apps.
2. What the app uses and why
Camera
The app uses your camera to scan barcodes and, if you choose, to photograph a product label. Barcode scanning happens on your phone. If you photograph a label, the app reads the text on your phone and fills in the product details for you to check. The photo is not uploaded to us or anyone else. You can turn camera access off at any time in your phone’s settings; you can still type barcodes and labels in by hand.
Barcode numbers
When you scan or type a barcode, the app sends that barcode number to look the product up in: - Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts and Open Products Facts (free public databases run by the Open Food Facts non-profit, France) - USDA FoodData Central (a free public database run by the United States Department of Agriculture) - Our own server (to check shared labels and AI estimates, see below)
Only the barcode number is sent, along with the technical information every internet request carries (such as your phone’s IP address). These services have their own privacy policies. We don’t send them anything about you.
Shared labels (product details other users can see)
Some products, such as many shop own-brands, aren’t in any free database. If you scan one and then save its label (name, brand, category, ingredients, allergens and nutrition values), we store those product details on our server against that barcode, so the next person who scans the same product gets a result straight away.
We store: the barcode, the product details you saved, how many times it was saved, and when. We do not store: your photo, your name, your phone’s ID, your location, or anything else about you.
Please don’t type personal information into label fields. Anything entered there is treated as product information and can be shown to other users.
AI estimates
If a product has a name but its ingredient list or nutrition values are missing, our server may ask an AI service (Anthropic, the maker of Claude, United States) to estimate them. We send only product information: the barcode, product name, brand, category and whatever details are already known. We never send anything about you. The estimate is saved on our server for that barcode so it can be shown to every user who scans that product, and the app marks it clearly as “estimated by AI”.
Anthropic processes this through its commercial API. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
Your scan history and saved items
Your history and the products you save are stored only on your phone. We can’t see them. Deleting the app deletes them.
App updates
The app checks for small updates when it opens, using Expo (the service the app is built with, United States). This check sends basic technical information such as the app version and phone type. It doesn’t include anything about you or your scans.
Our server
Our server is hosted by Replit (United States). Like almost every web server, it may keep short-term technical logs (for example IP address, time of request, and which barcode was looked up) to keep the service running and to stop abuse. We don’t use these logs to identify you.
3. What we don’t do
- We don’t sell, rent or trade any data.
- We don’t show advertising.
- We don’t use analytics or tracking tools that follow you across other apps or websites.
- We don’t collect your location, contacts, photos library, health records, or payment details.
4. Where data is processed
Product lookups and our server are processed outside Australia, mainly in the United States and France (the services listed above). Only barcodes and product information are sent there, not information about you.
5. Children
MannaFork is a general shopping tool and is not directed at children under 13. Because we don’t collect personal information, we don’t knowingly collect any from children.
6. Health information
MannaFork scores and notes are general information about products, based on their labels and public data. They are not medical, dietary or allergy advice. Always read the actual product label, especially for allergies, and talk to a doctor or dietitian about your own health. We don’t ask for or store any information about your health.
7. Your choices
- Camera: turn it off any time in your phone’s settings.
- History: delete it in the app or by deleting the app.
- Shared labels: if you saved a product label and want it removed or corrected, email us with the barcode and we’ll fix it.
- Questions or complaints: email us (below). If you’re in Australia and not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If the change is significant (for example, if we ever add accounts), we’ll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
